According to the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry. History tells us that in the 18th and early 19th century, significant numbers of Irish immigrants began to arrive in Canada. By 1867, 20% of the Canadian population was made up of people of Irish descent. They were out numbered only by the British and French-Canadians. Approximately 30% of the Australian population is of Irish descent making, some say, Australia the most “Irish” country outside of Ireland. The Irish settled all over the United States with significant numbers in cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia. Recent statistics indicated that over 40 million persons in the United

States claim some Irish ancestry, and that 25% of this figure claim solely Irish ancestry. And the Irish have made a significant contribution to the development of New Zealand. 15% of the population is estimated to be of Irish descent.


Looking at the past two centuries, Ireland has had the highest emigration rates of any European country. Of course An Gorta Mór, The Great Hunger contributed to and accelerated much of the movement of Irish people from their beloved Ireland to all corners of the globe.

Undeniable is the extreme pride and richness of culture and traditions the Irish carried with them regardless of where they settled. The singing and playing of musical instruments. The Irish dancing.
